Aberdeen & North East Deaf Society Charity Profile

The Aberdeen & North East Deaf Society was first established in 1895 and was originally known as the Aberdeen Deaf and Dumb Benevolent Society. (Please note that the terminology 'Deaf & Dumb' is no longer considered to be politically correct).

With changes in legislation, local authorities became responsible for providing statutory social work services. The Aberdeen & North East Deaf Society became an agent of the local authority with a social work service agency agreement with what was then known as Grampian Regional Council, to provide a professional social work service based on local authority guidelines, for the Grampian area.

Since then and particularly in recent years, the work of the Society has changed considerably to ensure a wider range of services is provided and to promote the needs of all groups of people who are affected by deafness i.e. Deaf, Deafened, Deafblind, Hard of Hearing and those who experience Tinnitus and other associated conditions such as Menieres, acoustic neuromas, etc..

In 1996 Grampian Regional Council ceased to exist following reorganisation and the development of three new local authorities, Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray. The Society is now known as a Service Provider and has service agreements with each of these three local authorities.

Although the work of the Society has changed considerably over the years, the aims of the Society remain the same - provide services for the well-being of those people affected by deafness in the North East of Scotland.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Aberdeen & North East Deaf Society is a voluntary organisation of charitable status, established in 1895. The Society is dependent upon legacies, donations, fund raising and local authority grants.

The Aims

Aims of the Society are to provide for the social, welfare and spiritual needs of Deaf and Hearing Impaired people in the North East of Scotland, estimated to be one in seven of the population.

The Aberdeen & North East Deaf Society provides services to Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray. The Society's main office is based in Smithfield Road, Aberdeen, and there is a sub office in Institution Road, Elgin. Both centres have a Resource Centre for technical equipment. Drop-in services are also provided in rural areas throughout Aberdeenshire and Moray and staff make home visits throughout the North East of Scotland.
