YMCA of the Greater Houston Area Charity Profile
For any organization to stand the test of time it must be able to keep up with the world around it. Through all of our 120 year history, the YMCA of the Greater Houston Area has been a place where people can find hope, fellowship and healing. The YMCA has always stayed true to its mission, values and purpose of helping persons grow in spirit, mind and body. With 38 centers and over 300 program locations serving eleven counties, the YMCA of the Greater Houston Area is helping to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
Mission Statement: Our mission is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Our Purpose: The Association, in harmony with the YMCA national purpose, perceives itself as a Christian fellowship dedicated to improving the quality of life through programs and services which provide opportunities for people to reach their highest potential, develop a positive attitude of self and others, appreciate good health and fitness, acquire a value system and maintain spiritual awareness that manifests itself in our daily lives.
Our Values: The YMCA is committed to putting Christian principles into practice. YMCA programs, activities and relationships teach and model Judeo-Christian values in order to strengthen kids, families and communities. Caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, faith are core values evident in all that we do.
Character Development: The YMCA is challenging people, especially children and teens to accept and demonstrate positive values. The five core values of the YMCA of Greater Houston are emphasized in all programs: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring and Faith. Through our programs and the modeling of these values, the YMCA continues to meet the needs of our ever-changing community.

Volunteers are at the heart of the YMCA and that is why the YMCA is at the heart of the community.
When you are a volunteer at the YMCA, you are part of a not-for-profit organization with a vision of building Strong Kids , Strong Families and Strong Communities .
Your time and talent will translate into helping a child, mentoring a teen or providing support for families.
You can help create a safe, healthy and caring environment that will nurture people of all ages and backgrounds, helping them to become successful members of our community.
To help you choose an area in which you would be interested; the YMCA has established five categories of volunteers:
Program volunteers - help to lead programs as an instructor, coach aide.
Support volunteers - work in the office, front desk or around the grounds.
Fundraising volunteers - raise funds through our campaigns (annual, capital, special or sustaining); work on endowment development; or work at/run special events.
Policy volunteers - serve on the board of directors, on a committee or a task force.
Managerial volunteers - help to manage or administer Y operations Volunteers are essential to the YMCA.

Your gift to the YMCA helps to provide support for programs that teach young people life andleadership skills, peaceful conflict resolution and core values. Charitable gifts also provide financial assistance to ensure that low-income families have equal opportunity to participate in YMCA programs.
