American Indian Cultural Center Of Amarillo Charity Profile
TITIO, a local organization with about 100 members representing 21 tribes, has dreamed of opening such a center for years, according to President Billy Turpin.
Country singer Michael Martin Murphey performed, and Native American dignitaries - including Cheyenne Peace Chief Gordon Yellowman of El Reno, Okla., Kiowa Billy Evenshorse Drum of Carnegie, Okla., and Comanche Melvin Kerchie, "the last of the ancestral chiefs" of Lawton, Okla. - traveled to Amarillo to participate in the dedication celebration, Turpin said. The morning also included a color guard from the Amarillo Chapter of Vietnam Veterans and a group of Comanche War Scouts from Lawton.
The dedication coincided with a weekend Pioneer Days event sponsored by Sunset Center, where the new cultural center is located.
