Center For The Third Sector, National Chengchi University Charity Profile
Center for the Third Sector (CTS) of National Cheng-Chi University is Taiwan’s first university-level research center responsible for and committed to the research on the third sector. The formation of the third sector is one of the characteristics and achievements of a contemporary society. The concept of the third sector comes from civil self-governance and mutual support within a community in a hope to realize social justice. It fills particularly the gap in those fields where the private or public sectors are unwilling or incapable to get involved, and at the same time protects public interests. Its backbone is a network of non-profit organizations (NPOs) supported by citizens who voluntarily take actions to participate in public affairs. Both the organizations and citizens, out of the concerns about public policies and issues, jointly make efforts to shield the rights and interests of citizens or minority groups with a goal to effectively improve the quality of the public life.
National Cheng-Chi University is the first to establish a research center for the third sector because it has valued the sector’s increasingly important role in today’s society. As early as the end of 1995, a group of the university’s professors across disciplines voluntarily established a research studio focusing on non-profit organizations, and continuously carried out a number of research activities, including series speeches, policy forums, academic seminars, and integrated research grants from Taiwan’s National Science Council. A long-term cooperation network was therefore formed. In 2002, the university council decided to establish the Center for the Third Sector and positioned it as a university-level research center, which opened a new page in its history. As the research on the third sector has become one of the university-level issues, all of the teachers in the university, regardless of department or discipline, are welcomed to participate in the research team on the third sector, jointly construct a knowledge system, and thereby affirm the fact that the university plays a leading role in the field of humanities and social science in Taiwan.
The Center for the Third Sector, in addition to its contribution to integrating resources within the university, shoulders the mission of gearing Taiwan’s top university to international standards. Domestic or foreign experts and scholars interested in the third sector research are encouraged to utilize the center’s academic services, through which the purpose of academic exchange and knowledge sharing can be achieved. We believe that knowledge with the mission to realize social justice will not only benefit the society in Taiwan but also play an important role in the development of human civilizations.
