Humane Society of the Black Hills Charity Profile
The first local animal shelter was established in November 1956 and was disbanded following the flood of 1972. In April of 1976, the shelter was opened in the former wastewater treatment plant. It was remodeled with double high stacked small cages that drained into an open sewage trough designed to handle about 2,500 total animals annually, with 75 dog runs and 45 cat cages. The Pennington Humane Society was established November 1968. Later the name was changed to the Humane Society of the Black Hills HSBH).
In 1988 HSBH took over the operation of the animal shelter from the city. In 1992 the HSBH assumed operation of animal control from the City of Rapid City and Pennington County by establishing the Animal
Welfare Office. The Humane Society of the Black Hills presently provides both animal welfare services and animal sheltering services for the greater Rapid City and Pennington County areas and Ellsworth
Air Force Base.
We currently operate the only major animal shelter west of the Missouri River in SD. Because of the shortage of shelters, we receive strays and animals for adoption picked up from as many as 20
different counties. These animals come from a population base of approximately 100,000 people. A large segment of the population is comprised of ranching and rural areas.
