St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre, South Dakota is the only hospital of its size located within a radius of 160 miles. St. Mary's is part of Catholic Health Initiatives system based in Denver, Colorado. The healthcare center is Pierre's second largest private employer with 475 employees. In 2000, St. Mary's invested $12.5 million into a major building addition to upgrade its services for patients in the emergency room, same day surgery, and operating rooms. Another $12 million building addition was completed in 2004 to house transitional care, kidney dialysis and rehabilitation.
