Mother of Peace Orphanage Charity Profile
Mother of Peace Communities are called by God to restore traditional family life, in particular the Catholic family way of life based on Christian Gospel values and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Having regard for the needs, interests, and well-being of the general public, all Mother of Peace Communities strive to meet the particular needs of the area in which the Community lives and operates, by aiding persons in distress. This encompasses, inter alia: caring for abandoned children and providing the structure of a home and family; maintaining language and cultural identities where possible; bringing up children to be responsible members of society; and, providing palliative care to the terminally ill.
Mother of Peace is situated in Lower Illovo, Kwazulu Natal. Although classed as a rural area, we are just 30 minutes from Durban, one of the largest cities in South Africa. Mother of Peace has 41 free standing units and a large double storey building on its property. Of the 41 free standing units, 20 are in the process of being upgraded to house Orphans and Vulnerable children from surrounding communities. Each unit will house six children, together with a house mother.
Mother of Peace Orphanage Volunteer Information
Mother of Peace Illovo runs an international volunteer program through a Dutch NGO called Be More. Be More sends 8 short term volunteers to Mother of Peace every month, for a minimum of 4 weeks. The international volunteers help with raising and taking care of the children, bathing the young ones, playing games etc.
The volunteers run a home work room project and toy library, assist in teaching English, give computer lessons, do sports, help out at the daycare and Grade R, help out at the school of one of our children and much more. In addition to this, volunteers support the housemothers by helping them with their work and sharing skills with them.
International people interested of volunteering at Mother of Peace can look at the Be More website: www.be-more.nl / www.be-more.org for more information or contact Be More on email@example.com
Mother of Peace Illovo is always looking for local volunteers to assist us in raising and educating our children. At the moment we mostly need help with fundraising and working 1 on 1 with the children that struggle to read and write in English. We would also like to have local volunteers that commit to coming around to play sports with our children during the weekend.
