PROBLEMS in RWANDA (FOR CHILDREN AND WOMEN)
Due to genocide (1994), wars, HIV/AIDS, polygamy and extreme poverty, Orphans and other Vulnerable Children/Youth (OVCY) , Girls and Women are facing the following problems:
ORPHANS and other Vulnerable CHILDREN/YOUTH: Lack of education opportunities, no access to health facilities, lack of protection, lack of community support (isolated and traumatized), lack of households basic needs, not informed on their rights, no placement and succession done for them mostly for children in households affected and infected by HIV/AIDS and lack of economic security opportunities and lack of information on their rights.
GIRLS and WOMEN: lack of education opportunities, lack of information on their rights, lack of protection (sexual harassment and exploitation), lack of economic security opportunities and are dependent to men. Most women are widows and are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.
CHILDREN UNDER 7 YEARS: Early childhood is considered as the most critical foundation stages of growth and development. These early years have longer impact on the full life course than any other period. It is a period when a child needs to develop physical, cognitive and socio emotional aspects. Nevertheless, poor nutrition, lack of affection and stimulation can create deficits for those children. FCYF has realized that many youth from children headed households families and widows headed households are not properly raised, and little attention is paid to them. Apart from that, there is another crucial issue of children at the age of attending school who do not do so due to families' problems or some of them are assigned by parents or care takers to look after their young children. In Rwanda, a child with starting the 7th year has to start primary education.
CHILDREN/YOUTH and WOMEN infected by HIV/AIDS: When HIV positive and poor, suffer from stigma and discrimination, lack of proper food (malnutrition), lack of economic security opportunities and education.
