Young Urban Mobile Professionals Charity Profile
Created in 1995, it is the largest civil society development foundation in Siberia.A foundation that supports the development of a democracy that is responsive to the needs of all citizens by encouraging citizen participation and a political, social and economic environment that recognizes the value of civic initiatives and promotes opportunities for people to become active.
In essence this means supporting critical initiatives that neither government nor business will support. This can mean drawing attention to new and promising organizations or issues that have not yet been recognized as important. It can involve expanding the forms and type of support being provided to meet current needs for innovation. It can also mean making funding available to support grassroots campaigns targeted at ensuring that government and business are serving the interests of the people.
The mandate of civil society development foundations is not only to support worthy projects and organizations, but to be an innovator and identify new grant making approaches that maximize the impact of the limited money available to move the process forward. It is also to also leverage their work as a grant making organization, promoting models and best practices to government and business. For example, by including local government representatives on grant committees starting in 1995, we introduced government to the concept of distributing money for social projects on a competitive basis and gave them experience in applying the technology for conducting an open grant competition. This practice was totally unknown to government, and as a result of our work, today there are open grant competitions for NGOs in all regions covered by the Siberian Center Network. Thus, for a civil society development foundation, how they operate is as important as what they support.
