Aquidneck Island Land Trust Charity Profile
Founded around 1990 by a dedicated group of Aquidneck Island residents, ALT focused its inaugural efforts on building community awareness of the imperative to conserve and protect open space on this Island. On December 8, 1993, ALT secured its first conservation easement via a donation of the development rights to 2.4 acres of the estate of John J. Slocum on Bellevue Avenue in Newport.
In 1998, the Prince Charitable Trusts, the van Beuren Charitable Foundation, and the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust collectively granted $8.15 million to ALT over a five-year period, allowing the organization to begin to execute its mission in earnest. These grants were a turning point for the organization, allowing it to hire professional staff and accelerate the pace of its land preservation mission.
Today, ALT is overseen by over 25 Trustees and guided by over 20 additional Advisory Board members, providing expertise in disciplines such as law, finance, real estate, environmental protection, business and land conservation. Furthermore, full time staff manage the complex operations of land conservation, stewardship, outreach and fundraising. Currently ALT has over 1,000 members and supporters and has over 2,012 acres under its protection.

Aquidneck Island Land Trust Volunteer Information
Volunteers Needed
Aquidneck Land Trust volunteers, from our Board of Trustees to our property monitors and special events crew provide enthusiasm, support and elbow grease to keep ALT accomplishing its mission.
ALT's annual summer fundraiser, Fiesta Verde, and our Golf Tournament rely on a large committee and dozens of volunteers who help organize, set up, host and clear up the event, which is a major source of Land Trust funds.
A large and varied group mails our appeals and invitations to supporters. Others clip and file newspaper articles, and still others host ALT Cultivation Parties at their homes. Several help maintain our trails and steward our protected properties. Some take photos, provide legal advice and design our publications.
With a small staff, the Land Trust has numerous tasks that might go unfinished if it weren't for our volunteers. But even with the great volunteers we already have, ALT needs more to join in the fun and help preserve land.
