York Habitat for Humanity Charity Profile
We can't thank YOU our volunteers and supporters enough for making this project a reality. The fire on the 300 block of East Poplar Street was started by children playing with a lighter in a 3rd floor bedroom and quickly spread down the row of homes. By the end of spring 2011, York Habitat hopes to have funding in place to begin the rebuilding and restabilizing efforts at 351 East Poplar Street. This once abandoned, deteriorating structure will be transformed into a completely renovated, energy efficient, FULLY SPRINKLERED home for a lower income family who is actively partnering with Habitat in its unique homeownership program. First the adjoining homes had to come down. Currently, volunteers have demolished the three houses adjoining the Fire Build House that are so structurally unsound that they must be torn down. Then the pressure is on to replace the roof and reconstruct the exterior wall of the Fire Safety Build House at 351 East Polar Street begins. So during the upcoming months, York Habitat has been using at least thirty to forty volunteers a week to work Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays preparing the property home ownership.

York Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Information
Construction volunteers make decent, affordable housing possible for people in need. Thank you to the thousands of individuals, corporations, churches, clubs, seniors, and families that have constructed and rehabbed almost 100 homes in York County! Construction volunteers work rain or shine on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The first step to volunteering at York Habitat for Humanity is to register for a mandatory Volunteer Orientation. Orientations are usually held twice a month on the first Saturday of the month from 9:00-10:30 a.m. and now also offered on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. The orientations include an introduction to Habitat’s unique homeownership program, safety instruction, and optional hands-on construction training for people without prior carpentry experience. Construction volunteers must complete the orientation prior to being placed on the construction schedule. See calendar.
Due to the large volume of construction volunteers each year and the necessity of sticking with a schedule, we cannot hold orientations on construction work days. Exceptions will only be made for whole-house sponsors and week-long work camps.
