Society Of Environmental Journalists Charity Profile
SEJ members envision an informed society through excellence in environmental journalism.
The mission of the Society of Environmental Journalists is to advance public understanding of environmental issues by improving the quality, accuracy, and visibility of environmental reporting.
Towards that end, SEJ provides critical support to journalists of all media in their efforts to cover complex issues of the environment responsibly. Through combined efforts of board, staff, members, and appropriate partners, SEJ offers unique educational programs and services for working journalists, educators, and students, including annual and regional conferences; daily EJToday news service; quarterly SEJournal; biweekly TipSheet and other publications; SEJ Awards for Reporting on the Environment; members-only listservs; mentoring program; website-based resources; and a lively membership network of journalists and academics.
Society Of Environmental Journalists Volunteer Information
The spirit of volunteerism infuses everything we do at SEJ. Please let us know if you have an idea that will further our mission to improve the quality, accuracy and visibility of environmental reporting — and to have a good time while doing it. If you're already a member, there are lots of ways to help. If you're not a member yet, then by all means join us.
Here are some ways members can help:
Sign up to be a mentor or mentee in the mentoring program.
Send in story links to EJToday, our web-based daily digest of new and noteworthy environmental journalism.
Organize a panel or field trip at the annual conference.
Work with SEJ staff to organize regional events in cities around the U.S. and Canada.
Represent SEJ and recruit new members at journalism conferences and in classrooms. Join the SEJ First Amendment Task Force to fight for access to environmental information. Pass along FOI-related news tips to WatchDog TipSheet. Pass along environmental news tips to TipSheet, web links to the links library, and summaries of upcoming events to the Environmental Events Calendar.
Write an article for SEJournal. Contribute to the 21st Century Fund, an endowment to safeguard SEJ's future.
Serve on the awards committee, which oversees the SEJ Awards for Reporting on the Environment.
Run for a seat on the board of directors. (See the election guidelines and board FAQ's.)
If you have additional ideas, we'd love to hear them. Each year at our annual conference, we present an outstanding SEJ volunteer with the David Stolberg Meritorious Service Award, named for a founder of SEJ. Past winners have included Randall Edwards, Paul MacClennan, Russ Clemings, Michael Rivlin, Orna Izakson/Dawn Stover, Ken Ward Jr., Denny Wilkins, Dale Willman and Mike Dunne. They and many others made SEJ what it is today!
