Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington Charity Profile
Young Audiences of Oregon was founded in 1958 as a local chapter of the nation’s largest arts-in-education organization. In 1989, the Portland-based organization merged with a smaller chapter in Vancouver to become Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington. We have steadily grown in scope and programming, evolving from presenting only classical music performances in our early years to currently offering a full range of educational arts programming in multiple disciplines and cultures – the only arts organization in the region to do so.
Young Audiences was the first organization ever to receive the prestigious National Medal of Arts. Awarded in 1994, the White House recognized Young Audiences’ achievements in working with educational systems, the arts community and the private and public sectors to ensure that the arts play a decisive role in the education of young people. Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington, founded in 1958 as the regional chapter of the nation’s leading arts and education organization, has evolved from presenting only classical music assembles in our early years to currently offering a full ranges of programs in multiple artistic disciplines and cultures, all in support of our mission: To enhance children’s learning with creative resources from the arts community.
Arts and Education programming is the heart of Young Audiences’ service to the community, bringing artists and teachers together to ensure the arts are an integral part of our children’s educational experience. Students actively participate in music, drama, visual arts, dance and literary arts through Residencies, Performances, Workshops and Family Arts Nights. These programs celebrate, teach and open worlds of expression, helping students cultivate essential knowledge and skills necessary for success in the 21st century- imagination, creativity, self-direction, flexibility and appreciation of diversity and teamwork.
