Cincinnati Nature Center Charity Profile

In 1965, a handful of dedicated and visionary naturalists, including Kay Benedict, Helen Black, Karl H. Maslowski, Katherine T. Nyce and Stanley M. Rowe Sr., created an organization where people could experience, study and enjoy the natural world. Cincinnati Nature Center's original site, Rowe Woods in Milford, Ohio, was the physical location for this new organization.

The effort of these founding trustees laid the groundwork for a generous gift from Neil and Camilla McElroy in 1972. Interested in preserving their farm for future generations, the McElroy's donated their 535-acre Long Branch Farm in Goshen, Ohio, to Cincinnati Nature Center.

A third gift of land was made in 1995, by siblings Jim and Dorothy Gorman, created Gorman Heritage Farm. This 100-acre family farm in Evendale, Ohio, opened in 1996. Due to budget constraints, the farm was closed to the public August 15, 2003. Later that year, the Village of Evendale voted to accept the property from CNC and the deed was transferred. The Village reopened the farm in May 2004.

Today, Cincinnati Nature Center's two sites (Rowe Woods and Long Branch Farm & Trails) comprise over 1,600 acres of irreplaceable natural and agricultural land, making it one of the top 10 nature centers in the country. Cincinnati Nature Center's education programs reach 12,000 school children each year with hands-on lessons about ecology, and help ensure responsible stewardship of the land well into the future.
