Shared Harvest Foodbank Charity Profile
The primary purpose of SHF is to alleviate poverty and hunger by soliciting and judiciously distributing surplus marketable and wholesome grocery products to a network of charitable food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other distributing organizations, which in turn distribute these products to needy and hungry people.
SHF will develop, monitor, strengthen, and otherwise support this network of charities by fostering communication, setting standards for distribution and storage, and disseminating educational materials appropriate to our collective mission of helping people in poverty.
SHF will educate the public and private sector, and the community in general, about the nature and solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty.
Shared Harvest Foodbank Volunteer Information
Commodity Supplemental Food Program: This is a federally funded nutrition program that provides a monthly allotment of 35 pounds of nutritious supplemental food for persons who are over 60 years old, residing in Butler, Warren and Preble Counties and whose income is at or below 130% of the poverty level. We distribute 1,550 boxes each month containing 21 to 25 food items. We need volunteer help to assemble these food boxes. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 35 pounds. This project? average recipient is 73 years old and tries to live on $700 a month. They depend on this box of food to help them afford to live independently and with dignity. If you are interested in volunteering for this project, contact Steve Cox, Program Director at 874-0114 or email steve@sharedharvest.org. preparation for distribution to our network.
Back Pack Program: This locally funded program provides carriers of nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to elementary students who receive free lunch at school, to take home on weekends when other resources may not be available. We distribute over 500 carriers every week to students referred to the program by teachers, school nurses or counselors in Fairfield, Lakota, Hamilton and New Miami school districts. These students have been identified as being in crisis, needing intervention and a common factor amongst these students is food insecurity. We need volunteers to help assemble the carriers with 11 ?14 items. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 20 pounds. If you are interested in volunteering for this project, contact Chuck Osso, Agency Relations Director at 874-0114 or email chuck@sharedharvest.org
Mailings: we produce six large mailings a year which needs to be assembled. This is fairly easy sit down work. We normally have bulk mailings of 40,000 to 60,000 pieces in the spring and fall, in addition to our regular newsletter mailings of about 5,500 pieces each season. These mailing generate about 15% of our annual budget. If you are interested in helping with the mailings, contact Tina Osso, Executive Director at 874-0114 or email tina@sharedharvest.org.
