Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Charity Profile
The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is more than just a distribution center. We are many things to many people. We are a community resource, a lifeline, an educator and advocate, an emergency food provider and a source of hope to those in need.
We believe that no one should have to go hungry in our "land of plenty." Children shouldn't have to go to bed hungry; families shouldn't have to decide between buying food and paying rent; and seniors shouldn't have to choose between paying for medication and having a warm meal to eat.
Ending hunger is more than just our mission; it's something we strive to do everyday. It's a pledge we have made to our community to end hunger in Summit, Stark, Portage, Medina, Wayne, Holmes, Tuscarawas and Carroll counties. In 1982, based on a commitment by community leaders to help the increasing number of families requesting food assistance, the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank was formed. In 2007, the Foodbank distributed over 12 million pounds of food and provided meals for over 163,000 people in need in Northeast Ohio.
The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is a 85,000 square foot warehouse with over 8,000 square feet in freezer and cooler space, and 12,000 square feet dedicated to the Product Recovery Center. Grocery items that have been damaged at the retail level are inspected and sorted by trained personnel in our Product Recovery Center. Usable items are then distributed to local hunger centers. Food distributed by the Foodbank helps to feed people throughout all stages of life. From toddlers to senior citizens; the Foodbank is there to help.

Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Volunteer Information
Volunteers are an essential building block in the Foodbank's commitment to end hunger. Volunteering your time at the Foodbank is a gift in many ways!
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, a variety of opportunities exist. Some examples include:
Repacking bulk donated or purchased products into individual or family sized packaging.
Sorting, cleaning and repacking donated products that have minor defects or flaws that do not effect the quality of the product.
Volunteer Saturdays, which occur every third Saturday of the month.
Special Foodbank events that may include being at off-site locations during evening and/or weekend hours.
Your volunteer orientation begins with a tour of the Foodbank, where you will see first-hand how donated items travel from the donation site to the agencies who feed people in need. Use this opportunity to select the type of project that fits your schedule or abilities and use the tour as an educational tool for your school class, social or civic groups, church or youth organization.
