Fair Housing Advocates Association Charity Profile
FHAA is a non-profit fair housing organization dedicated to supporting the fair housing policy of the United States of America which states “It is the policy of the United States to provide, within constitutional limitations, for fair housing throughout the United States.” FHAA supports this policy by identifying, challening, and eliminating discrimination in housing through education, counseling, advocacy, testing, and enforcement.
FHAA provides support and assistance to persons, including tenants, landlords, and homeowners who believe they have been discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status, or handicap. Examples of such assistance include, the FHAA assisting:
• Bernard, a physically disabled man whose landlord failed to design and construct his bathroom and kitchen in an accessible manner as required by fair housing accessibility requirements.
• Michelle, a single mother of three children whose application and security deposit were returned to her because the landlord did not want to rent to families which had three or more children.
• Dontia, an African-American woman whose family was subjected to racial harassment by her neighbor’s boyfriend who allegedly burned a cross in her yard and used racial epithets and slurs.
• Deborah, a woman whose landlord allegedly tried to evict her after she refused his pleas to have a relationship with him in exchange for a waiver of rent.
• African-American neighborhoods in Zanesville, Ohio that was allegedly denied public water service, while such public water service was provided to surrounding non-minority neighborhoods.
