Avery County HFH Charity Profile
Avery County Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual, church, and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - sweat equity - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments are recycled back into the program to build more houses.
Avery County HFH Volunteer Information
Volunteers are always needed to help with mailings and to help acknowledge gifts given to Habitat in honor and in memory of individuals.
Habitat operates a thrift store in Newland that sells donated used and recycled building materials, furniture, antiques, appliances, tools, and household goods. Volunteers are needed for sales, merchandise display, pricing, donation pick-up, and other tasks.
Volunteer attorneys help prepare titles for both the purchase of land by Habitat and the sale of the home to Habitat homeowners. Volunteers with Real Estate experience are needed to help acquire property (both individual lots and larger parcels) for eventual use for Habitat Homes.
