YMCA of Greater Charlotte Charity Profile
The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in London in 1844 by George Williams. Williams wanted to provide a wholesome, Christian alternative to life on the streets to young men away from home for the first time. They offered Bible study and prayer.
In 1851, the first YMCA in the United States was founded in Boston by sea captain and missionary, Thomas Valentine Sullivan. The YMCA movement quickly spread across the United States.
The YMCA of Greater Charlotte was founded in November of 1874 to help young men grow in spirit, mind and body.
Today, our YMCA, together with YMCAs across the nation, is the largest community service organization.
Our Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Our Vision: The YMCA of Greater Charlotte will connect and engage people to enhance lives and build community.
