Burn Children Care Foundation, known in Spanish in the abbreviated way (APROQUEN), was founded in 1991 as a non-profit organization to provide medical services free of charge to burn children. In 1993 APROQUEN redesigns and equips the first burn unit center/facility/unit in the country located in the Fernando Velez Paiz Hospital in the capital city of Managua. This small but much needed unit provided treatment and care for 11 years. In 2004, with the intention to not only expand the attention to burn children but also to provide them with an integral, gratuitous and world class treatment, Burn Children Care Foundation founds its own Burn Unit. The Burn Unit, located at the Metropolitan Hospital in Managua and equipped and administered by the foundation, meets worldwide quality standards.
