La Esperanza Granada Charity Profile
Located in Granada, Nicaragua, La Esperanza Granada is a volunteer group focusing on children’s education. ‘Born’ in 2002, we started in one small village on the outskirts of Granada, and now help in seven poverty stricken areas. Our volunteers go out into the schools and assist the teachers, tutor young children, run sports programs, introduce children to computers, and help stimulate an interest in learning.
Volunteers come from around the world, for varying lengths of time. There are no program fees. Fund raising is independent and voluntary. We try to help in a noninvasive way, working directly with the children and with the local schools, teachers and parents to meet educational needs.
We are a nonprofit, nonpolitical, nondenominational organization, funded by donations of individuals, groups, service groups, schools etc. Donations are used for building new classrooms and schools, contributing to teacher’s salaries, and various things to help improve education and health for the children, such as making copies of exams and worksheets, buying textbooks, dental visits, sports supplies, school repairs and a never ending list of needs in this impoverished country.
Our focus is on children's education. By providing opportunities and resources for the long term educational advancement and community development of Nicaraguan pueblos we hope to brighten the future of the children and empower the people of the barrios to improve their current living conditions, and break the cycle of poverty.
Our motto: We believe in giving a hand up, not a handout.
La Esperanza Granada Volunteer Information
We value the time you are willing to give. There are no program fees to volunteer with La Esperanza Granada. There is no registration fee. We ask each volunteer to make a $20 contribution to administration costs in order to continue using all donations directly for the schools.
Volunteers are responsible for their own travel expenses, and for their living expenses in Granada. These costs include your airfare, accommodations, and living cost while you are in Nicaragua. We have inexpensive volunteer housing available as well as opportunities for homestays if you prefer.
Volunteers work 5 – 7 hours per day, four to five days per week. We normally ask that you stay a minimum of 8 weeks, though this can vary at certain times of the year. It may depend on the projects you will be helping with, your level of Spanish, your previous experience and our current needs. We welcome long term volunteers, and often have volunteers who stay 6 months and longer.
