Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation Charity Profile
The mission of the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation is to help lighten the burden and improve the quality of life for those suffering with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, their caregivers and their families.
LIAF is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the educational, social and emotional needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and their families and caregivers, as well as raising public awareness about the disease and lending expertise to healthcare professionals.
LIAF started in January 1988 in a typical grassroots fashion by five women including Chairman Emeritus Janet B. Walsh; each had a parent or grandparent with Alzheimer's disease and had shared the frustration of not knowing where to turn for much-needed help.
Initial efforts included an information hotline, production of the area's first comprehensive resource directory, and a social-model adult day services program in a rented room in a community center.
Since, LIAF's services have mushroomed and the adult day services program and other programs are being replicated by other groups to benefit those impacted by Alzheimer's disease. LIAF is regarded as a premier information source and service provider for individuals with dementia and their families, and the healthcare community.
