Cumberland County SPCA Charity Profile

The Cumberland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CCSPCA) was founded in 1891 and incorporated in June 1947, is a non-profit organization and a chapter of the NJ State SPCA. The staff and board of trustees are deeply involved and committed to all aspects of animal care and welfare. The money to finance the shelter comes from fees charged to municipalities to house their stray animals, fees charged to adopt, reclaim or release an animal to us, dues, donations, grants, fund-raisers and bequests from caring individuals. In our function as a humane society, the shelter serves as a refuge for thousands of stray, unwanted, abused, abandoned and sick animals. The CCSPCA is the only law enforcement agency authorized solely for the protection of animals. Each year our cruelty agents investigate nearly 1,000 reports of animal abuse and neglect. Many times we can stop abuse through education, however, other cases require prosecuting the guilty parties. Each year our humane education programs. offered free to schools and community groups, reach thousands, teaching basic pet care, safety and the understanding that all living creatures deserve our respect. Each year our clinic provides the general public and thousands of animals access to our low-cost spay and neuter services. In addition to sheltering an protecting animals, the shelter also acts as a clearinghouse for the thousands of phone calls requesting information on animal related issues and problems. Our new state of the art facility allows us to hold more animals longer, treat sick animals and offer the community access to low-cost spay/neuter services. We are still raising funds to help with the new shelter. If you would like to contribute please use the links provided at the top of every page. An online tour of the new shelter will be available shortly. The figures below represent the number of animals received in 2005. Number of released incoming dogs & puppies: 531 Number of released incoming cats & kittens: 536 Number of stray incoming dogs & puppies: 931 Number of stray incoming cats & kittens: 1959 Number of incoming dogs & puppies due to cruelty cases: 76 Number of incoming cats & kittens due to cruelty cases: 110 The SPCA also took in 273 "other" animals (rats, snakes, iguanas, ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, fish, hermit crabs, birds, etc.)

Cumberland County SPCA Volunteer Information

Looking for a way to help the animals but maybe don't have the means to do it financially? Or perhaps you'd like to be a little more "hands on" and see the difference you can make? Welcome to the world of volunteering......you've never worked for anything more rewarding. As a volunteer you are vitally important to the work we do. Every task you perform, no matter how small or routine it may seem, adds up to a significant contribution to the mission of our organization. Volunteer programs enable us and other non-profit organizations to fill needs in the community that might otherwise go unmet. From the Board of Directors at the CCSPCA who volunteer their time, to the crews who staff our fund-raising events, to the shelter workers and foster families who care for animals in our charge, dedicated volunteers are involved at every level of work. Some do it for the satisfaction of serving a cause they believe in. Others do it for the sake of interacting with the animals in a positive way, or meeting new people with a similar passion for animals. Still other volunteer to gain on-the-job experience for later career development. But all of them do it for the joy of helping. Whatever your reasons, your caring makes a difference. We all sincerely thank you for giving your time, and your role here will not be unrecognized. We value your participation and hope that the time you spend here will be equally rewarding for you.
