Blue Ocean Society For Marine Conservation Charity Profile
Blue Ocean is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness & conservation of the marine environment through education and research in New England. We educate the public about the marine environment through school and group presentations, presentations aboard local whale watch and sightseeing boats, tide pool excursions and beach cleanups, and providing a variety of educational materials.
We research local marine life, particularly endangered marine mammals, through data collection aboard local whale watch vessels. We also collect data on marine pollution aboard vessels and during our beach cleanups. This data is available to the public and for schools to be used in classroom projects. We work with other local whale research organizations including Allied Whale at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor and the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, MA in sharing data and catalogs.
We are actively involved in marine conservation through our beach cleanup and Adopt-a-Beach programs. We also work for conservation through creating awareness of the marine environment and threats to the environment with our educational programs, beach cleanups, internships and volunteer opportunities; keeping our members informed about threats to the Gulf of Maine and its marine life and gaining data that will help us determine which areas endangered species are using, and which areas most need to be protected

Blue Ocean Society For Marine Conservation Volunteer Information
We have many volunteer opportunities available. Positions are posted here and in the volunteer database run by the United Way of the Greater Seacoast.
New! Monofilament recycling bins - this spring and summer, we'll be placing several monofilament recycling bins at local marinas and tackle shops. We can use help with this project, both in getting the bins installed and monitoring them (removing fishing line and filling out a short data sheet) throughout the summer and fall.
Volunteer Night! We have monthly (usually) Volunteer Nights scheduled for 2 hours on a weeknight at our office. Projects have included collating newsletters, organizing merchandise, and helping to make photo note cards (which we use as a fundraiser). No training is needed, and it's a great way to meet our scientists/educators and learn more about what we do, while hanging out with others who care about the marine environment!
Beach cleanups - we have monthly beach cleanups at several beaches, and are always looking for help! Cleanup Information & Dates
Tide Pool/Touch Tank Educator
Office help - assist with special projects in our office. Can include mailings, organizing merchandise, filing, etc.
Promotions - we're looking for someone to help promote our special events, such as beach cleanups and presentations, and work with us on program development.
Educational programs - we're looking for people interested in marine education & conservation to work with our educational programs, either in schools or aboard whale watches (whale watches run May-October).
Executives - have experience in strategic planning/capacity building/fundraising? We'd like to hear your ideas!
Our volunteer positions are great for those who want to learn about marine life and marine conservation, or want to learn about careers in marine science.
