Special Olympics Nebraska Charity Profile
In 1968, Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded Special Olympics because she believed people with intellectual disabilities, young and old, could take part in and benefit from competitive sports. The lessons learned through sports would translate into competence and success off the field in the school, in the workplace and in the community.
Today, Special Olympics is the world's largest program of sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, inspiring greatness in more than a million athletes in over 150 nations worldwide.
Special Olympics Nebraska Volunteer Information
Globally, Special Olympics has an army of more than 500,000 volunteers! In Nebraska alone, we need over 5,000 volunteers annually to fulfill our mission to provide year-round sports training and competition. Volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities including coaches, day-of competition volunteers, and fundraising/special events, to name a few.
If interested in becoming a volunteer, please review the two types of volunteers and select the volunteer opportunity that fits your interests.
"Day of" Volunteers - "Day of" volunteers present awards to athletes, escort athletes, keep score or times during competition, act as the announcer, etc. All of these activities take place the day of the sporting event. This is a great opportunity for individuals who want a small time commitment. All volunteers are given a brief orientation prior to the day of the event. All volunteer positions are easy to learn. . . no experience is necessary.
Category "A" Volunteers - Category "A" volunteers are those who have regular, close physical contact with athletes; are in a position of authority or supervision of athletes; are in a position of trust of athletes; and/or handle substantial amounts of cash or other assets of athletes. Examples include: Coaches, Chaperones and Unified Partners. These volunteers are required to submit a signed, completed and truthful Volunteer Application. The information submitted will be used to complete a criminal records check.
