Montana Wilderness Association Charity Profile
Since 1958, the spirited people of Montana Wilderness Association have worked tirelessly to protect Montana’s wilderness, wildlife habitat, and traditional recreation opportunities. Our members were instrumental in the passage of the 1964 Federal Wilderness Act and in the designation of every Wilderness area in the state. We also helped win Wild and Scenic designations for the Missouri and Flathead rivers, and National Monument status for the Upper Missouri River Breaks. We are currently working in communities statewide to obtain new Wilderness protections. Our campaigns include the Beaverhead Deerlodge Partnership Strategy and the Blackfoot Landscape Stewardship Pilot Project, along with efforts associated with the Sleeping Giant, Rocky Mountain Front, Scotchman Peaks and Winton Weydemeyer areas. Complementing these efforts to gain new protections, our members continue to work daily to ensure state and national agencies appropriately identify and manage all wild lands in Montana. They are experts at Forest Planning and general agency support, building relationships, and helping people enjoy traditional recreation opportunities.

Montana Wilderness Association Volunteer Information
Montana Wilderness Association exists because of strong volunteer activism. Our members engage in a range of activities, from participating on the State Council to leading Wilderness Walks. We will help you focus your energy on an activity that best fits your talents and desires to contribute.
Volunteers who are interested in spreading a pro-wilderness message in their community can now participate in a program developed by the MWA State Council. The Council has produced a professional quality PowerPoint presentation, with script, about the positive values of wilderness. The show is suitable for a wide variety of audiences including service clubs, chambers of commerce, sportsmen’s groups, schools, churches etc. Training is available to coach volunteers through the presentation process, although the show is designed to be easy to use
Chapter Boards: Each of Montana Wilderness Association’s five chapters is governed by a volunteer board. The Chapter Boards work locally and regionally to increase participation in wilderness related activities, identify and protect local landscapes, and provide support for statewide campaigns. State Council: Montana Wilderness Association is governed by the State Council a group of elected volunteers from around the state and representatives from each of our Chapters. The State Council sets policy and strategy, and works to ensure the organization is financially sound.
