The YMCA of Greater Kansas City, founded on Christian principles, is an inclusive association of people united to enrich the quality of family, spiritual, social, mental and physical well-being.
Values-based, mission-driven and totally focused on building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. We serve more than 200,000 individuals and families in the metro area. Our 19 locations serve a diverse membership with a mix of programs including Health & Fitness, Aquatics, Sports, Summer Day Camps, Enrichment Programs, Child Care and Adaptive Programs.
Every day, every program, every relationship is an opportunity to practice the YMCA’s four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. From child care and youth sports to SilverSneakers® fitness programs for active older adults, from youth leadership development to partnering with local companies for work-based wellness programs, we are intent on building spirit-mind-body connections.
In some ways, today's programming looks like quite a change from our start in 1860. The Reverend William Leftwich helped establish a Young Men's Christian Association in Kansas City to protect the morals of the young men moving to this bustling river town to seek their futures. At heart, we're very much the same—values-based with a clear vision of developing individuals and communities for healthy futures and strong communities.
By intent and action, our reach is broad and welcoming. The Christian principles of our foundation continue to guide our programs and operations. Kansas City locations serve people of all ages, races and religions. Our annual mission campaign raises funds to provide financial assistance to families throughout Greater Kansas City. In 2006, the campaign awarded $2.9 million to help more than 20,000 people join the YMCA and participate in our programs. Our financial assistance program makes membership and programs available to all no matter what their economic situation.

Activate your inner volunteer spirit at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City by finding the volunteer commitment that works for you. Volunteer positions can be customized to fit your schedule, area of interest and geographic preference.
Join 3,100 other YMCA volunteers who make a difference in our community! We’ll provide training and support so that you will have fun while making a valuable contribution.
STRENGTHEN OUR CORE services at any of 19 YMCA membership centers:
• Dive into an aquatics volunteer position as a swim lesson aid, lifeguard or a Water Fitness Instructor
• Greet YMCA members at the front desk and give tours during high-traffic times
• Interact with youth age 2-12 in the Child Watch area
Coach a youth sports team or officiate a game
• Challenge yourself by becoming a Buddy for an athlete with special needs in the Challenger Program
• Mentor first generation college-bound high school students as an Adult Achiever in the Young Achievers Program
• Pitch in at a Kids Night Out event, Child Watch or at a special hoiday event
• Serve on your local YMCA Advisory Council
• Raise funds by assisting in outreach with the Fund Development Team
• Become a STAR in the life of a child! Know a high school or college student interested in volunteering 1/week? The S.T.A.R.S. (Strive to Achieve Real Success) program serves 3rd-6th grade students who are struggling in academics
