WITNESS was founded in 1993 as an organization aspiring to serve and support women in positions of leadership within the institutional church.

The first Board meeting was held in September, 1993 under the leadership of the Fopunder and first Executive Director, Diane Maodush-Pitzer.

From the beginning, WITNESS offered many presentations, from Miriam Therese Winter, Jennifer Granholm, Dan Mulhern, Parker Palmer, Joan Chittister and more.The quarterly newsletter, informal breakfasts and brown-bag lunches were also begun to provide support and networks for women working within and alongside the traditional church.

WITNESS addresses feminist theology and feminist spirituality through our award winning program, The Women's Leadership Institute. Women's Leadership Program focuses on the fundamentals of a woman's perspective and methods of understanding and sharing this wisdom. Through seminars, lectures, course work and collegial life sharing, participants examine women's history, theology, and ecclesiology.

WITNESS continues to prepare women for leadership in the church by hosting Retreats for College Students planning their future, our Reference Library, open to all, and presenting many programs to churches and organizations. We continue with the vision of our founder to help empower women to find their voice within the church.

WITNESS is a non-profit charitable organization funded by tax-deductible contributions, grants, and program fees.
