Maryland Salem Children's Trust Charity Profile
Salem provides residential foster care--home, family, counseling--and education to children from across the State of Maryland who have been abused, neglected and abandoned.
A nonprofit charity, it welcomes children with emotional and behavioral disturbances and a range of other diagnoses. Counseling is from a Christian perspective.
Salem opened its doors in Garrett County in 1979 to half a dozen children and as many staff. It is located on a 380-acre farm along Lower New Germany Road in Garrett County, between Grantsville and Frostburg.
Maryland Salem Children's Trust Volunteer Information
Resource Families make a one-on-one difference by temporarily "adopting" a child for once-a-month outings. Children at Salem know all about "resources". Every child longs for a resource family. Unlike many mission opportunities, being a resource family does not require one to give up home and personal belongings, say goodbye to loved ones, risk life or health, raise support, make a two-year fulltime commitment, or be subjected to painful immunizations. Being a Resource Family is a rewarding mission which requires only a little bit of time and a share of love.
Volunteer opportunities at Salem include workdays--typically in the summer--to tackle tasks such as clearing hiking/riding trails, freshening paint, cleaning up the grounds, and working in the garden. Volunteers have come from as far away as Baltimore and Washington, DC, to work, play and eat with the children of Salem.
Maryland Salem Children's Trust Donation Information
As a non-profit organization, Salem must supplement childcare payments from various agencies to meet daily operating expenses. We welcome both outright and planned gifts.
