Friends of Acadia Charity Profile

Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island, Maine, is one of Earth's most magnificent places. Its spectacular scenery and abundant recreational opportunities draw more than two million visitors each year, making it one of America's top ten most popular national parks. At 45,000 acres, it is also one of the smallest and most vulnerable.

This is why Friends of Acadia exists. As an independent nonprofit organization, we add a margin of excellence to park and island protection beyond what the government can do by:

Making crucial conservation grants to the park and communities
Recruiting and leading a corps of dedicated volunteers
Defending the area against threats
Advocating for Acadia before Congress and the Maine legislature

Friends of Acadia's stewardship can be seen every time you hike a trail, ski on the carriage roads, canoe on Jordan Pond or take in the view from the summit of Cadillac Mountain. Our accomplishments are made possible by the help of our volunteers and our 3,000 members. We are grateful for each and every Friend.

Friends of Acadia preserves, protects, and promotes stewardship of the outstanding natural beauty, ecological vitality, and distinctive cultural resources of Acadia National Park and surrounding communities for the inspiration and enjoyment of current and future generations.

Friends of Acadia Volunteer Information

Acadia National Park relies on the help of Friends of Acadia volunteers to maintain park resources. In 2007, 2,183 volunteers contributed more than 14,000 hours to outdoor projects in the park, cleaning drainage along carriage roads to reduce erosion, re-opening and maintaining trails and vistas, and constructing new village connector trails.

Friends of Schoodic , a committee of Friends of Acadia, provides volunteer opportunities dedicated to the care of Acadia’s Schoodic District. To learn more about Schoodic projects, visit the committee’s website at www.friendsofschoodic.org

Friends of Acadia member donations pave the way for volunteer stewards to provide their best work. Each year Friends provides transportation, tools, training, and leadership on outdoor stewardship projects.
