Yamashina Institute for Ornithology Charity Profile
In 1932, in his backyard in Shibuya, Tokyo, Dr. Yoshimaro Yamashina built a private museum to store his collection of bird specimens and books. Wishing to share his collection with anyone interested in birds, he opened his museum in 1942 as an institute, later known as The Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. It is now established as an ornithological centre and in 1984 it moved to the present location, Abiko in Chiba Prefecture, about 30km north east of Tokyo.
