Wwf Piemonte E Valle D'aosta Charity Profile
The WWF has identified 238 "ecoregions" which hold 90% of the world's biodiversity and are essential for the continuation of life on earth: here it is necessary to concentrate the actions of protection. The Amazon forest, the Great Barrier Reef Australia, the Congo basin are just some examples ... these are areas that fall within the territory of several states, which therefore have the responsibility to work together to preserve. Ecoregions affecting us are the Italian Alps and the Mediterranean.
Biodiversity is putting at risk also, and above all by climate change. The WWF is therefore committed throughout the world to put pressure on governments and businesses to mitigate the impacts, not to information campaigns and awareness aimed at the general public.
All actions of the WWF, also part of the global to achieve the 8 Millennium Development Goals, established in September 2000 by members of the United Nations, through the Millennium Declaration 2000 "(Millennium Declaration), to halve world poverty by 2015. In Italy we have a program of International Cooperation.
Based on the best scientific knowledge available (in Italy, for example, we use a Scientific Committee), the program of WWF takes place all over the world with 2000 projects that have a common denominator: the challenge of environmental sustainability.
In fact, the 'weight' of human on Earth has more than tripled in the last 40 years: consume resources (fertile soil, water, forests, marine resources, etc..) Faster than the Earth is regeneration capacity and that it is capable of "metabolize" our waste. Environmental sustainability is the prerequisite for guaranteeing the future of all living species, including humans.
Today we have the knowledge and technologies to reduce our impact on natural systems: choices will not be easy, serve extraordinary human qualities, innovation, adaptability, ability to react to challenges. But our future will depend on our choices today: to be set today as the construction of cities, from how we address the energy planning, how we protect and restore biodiversity.
The WWF, through its program in the world, is doing its part.
