Mada al-Carmel Charity Profile
Mada al-Carmel—The Arab Center for Applied Social Research (Mada) was founded in 2000 to advance the human and national development of the Palestinians in Israel through applied social research and policy analysis. In Arabic, the word “mada” means “unlimited potential defined only by limitless horizons.” The meaning of the word suggests the role that Mada’s founders envisioned for the organization to play in Palestinian society—helping Palestinians fulfill their collective potential in all respects.
Mada believes that rigorous and systematic research is a vital effort to develop the ability of this community to freely explore and assert indigenous definitions of their problems and possible solutions, advocate for their collective rights, and work to get their rights and needs met. Recognizing that historically this community has been studied primarily by others through a lens distorted by 'security' and 'demographic' concerns, Mada seeks to assert Palestinian views, experiences, and research into public, academic, and policymaking discourse in ways that have strategic and enduring impact.
By publishing credible research, Mada also helps to counter the dominant narrative’s historic record that tends to invalidate Palestinian existence, rights, and needs in the country. By fusing theoretical social science research with recommendations for institutional intervention and empowerment of the Palestinian homeland minority, Mada seeks to develop new frameworks and models of applied social science and to provide tools for long-term social transformation.
As an applied social research center, Mada makes a unique contribution to the larger movement for equal citizenship and democratic governance in binational situations. Locally, Mada brings together, inspires, trains, and supports senior and junior researchers to examine the collective status of the Arab minority and produce community-based policy recommendations. More broadly, Mada builds cooperative relationships with Palestinian, Israeli, and international researchers, thus contextualizing this community's issues within international discussions of minority rights, collective rights, equal citizenship, identity, and democracy in multicultural states worldwide.
