Compassion In World Farming , Ireland Charity Profile
CIWF-Ireland started in 1992. It is part of the international CIWF group which was founded in England and now has offices in the UK, the Netherlands and a sister organisation in France.
CIWF-Ireland is represented on the Irish Government's Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Council . This was established in 2002 as a response to growing public interest in high farm animal welfare standards in Ireland.
CIWF campaigns solely for improvements in farm animal welfare. Specifically, we want to see an end to industrialised farming of animals and the live export trade stopped. We are also opposed to genetic engineering and cloning of farm animals. We believe that farm animals should be kept in ways that allow them to carry out their natural behaviours and that do not cause them suffering or pain.
We campaign by highlighting particular issues in the media, giving public talks, lobbying politicians, holding events and occassional protests, and by meeting with any interested parties for discussion and sharing of views. We only campaign in a peaceful and legal manner and are totally opposed to any form of violence towards people, animals or property.
CIWF's views are based on scientific evaluation of animal welfare. CIWF produces excellent reports on farm animal welfare issues. For a list of these publications, go to the CIWF UK website.
CIWF also does education work. In Ireland, we have produced very useful educational materials for both primary and secondary schools. Most CIWF education resources are free to schools.
