Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa Charity Profile

We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted its first wish in Iowa in late 1985. Zachary, who lived in Eastern Iowa, was seriously ill and wanted to attend a performance of the world famous magician, David Copperfield. At his request, the collective wheels of the Make-A-Wish Foundation were set in motion and shortly thereafter Zach boarded a plane and flew to Sioux City, Iowa for a Thanksgiving dinner with his family and to attend a magic performance by David Copperfield. Zach not only attended the performance, but he actually got to meet Mr. Copperfield. Shortly thereafter, Zach lost his battle with his illness. However, the excitement of granting Zach's wish inspired the volunteers to begin the process of working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America to formally create the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa in 1987.To-date, the Iowa Chapter has fulfilled over 1,400 wishes, and anticipates granting 140 wishes during the current fiscal year. Wishes have included trips to Disney World, New York, and the Daytona 500; gifts of computers and stereos, as well as shopping sprees; and opportunities to meet celebrities like singing superstar Celine Dion, Nascar Drivers Jeff Gordon and Bobby LaBonte, and actor Jim Carrey.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa has matured and grown. Yet, growth is not our goal, it is merely the result of our success. Our unwavering goal, beginning with the granting of the first wish to Zachary in 1986, and continuing until the day that life-stealing maladies no longer afflict our children, is to help make all of our wish children's dreams come true.

Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa Volunteer Information

Without dedicated volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation would have a much more difficult time accomplishing our mission.

With twelve area committees across the state and over 450 volunteers in our database, the Foundation utilizes our volunteers to the best of our ability to get local communities involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Our area committees are always accepting new volunteers and have a wide variety of opportunities including wish granting (training required), special event/fundraising, outreach, publicity/public relations, volunteer
