Special Olympics Iowa Charity Profile
The mission of Special Olympics Iowa (SOIA) is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Special Olympics Iowa is a nonprofit organization serving Iowans with intellectual disabilities since 1968. SOIA provides training and competitions in 22 sports for more than 13,000 athletes representing each of Iowa’s 99 counties. SOIA makes a positive difference in the lives of athletes, their families and communities with more than 15,000 individuals and 2,000 certified coaches who volunteer to participate in the programs.
Welcome to Special Olympics Iowa, where we have been serving Iowans with intellectual disabilities for more than 39 years. Special Olympics Iowa (SOIA) is a statewide non-profit organization that utilizes sports training and competition to provide persons with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in a larger society where they are accepted and respected.
When Special Olympics was founded in 1968, the first competition in Iowa had fewer than 100 participating athletes. The growth of the program has been dramatic. Today, Special Olympics Iowa provides training and competition in 22 sports for over 13,000 athletes representing each of Iowa's 99 counties.
The people of Iowa have generously endowed Special Olympics Iowa with financial support and valuable volunteerism. More than 15,000 volunteers and over 2,000 coaches participate annually in various programs. Without the dedicated efforts of these volunteers, Special Olympics Iowa could not maintain the high quality of programs and educational support.
Throughout the Web site, you will see a variety of programs that are provided to more than 13,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities served annually by Special Olympics Iowa. We invite you to join us in our efforts to provide quality programs for our athletes by becoming a spectator, volunteer or sponsor.
In October 2004, Special Olympics Iowa moved to our new State Headquarters and Training facility in Grimes. Special Olympics Iowa Volunteer Information
Each year Special Olympics Iowa's (SOIA) programs are assisted by 14 volunteer area directors, more than 2,000 volunteer certified coaches and 15,000 other volunteers. It is no exaggeration to say that SOIA programs and services could not exist without the generous volunteer spirit of so many Iowans.
