Animal Rescue League of Iowa Charity Profile
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa Inc. (ARL) is Iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter, caring for many thousands of pets each year. The ARL serves people and pets from across the state of Iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) has grown dramatically since its founding in 1926 — expanding its programs that serve both people and homeless animals across Iowa. The most obvious growth is the number of animals the ARL provides shelter and care for each year. Intakes have increased annually from a few thousand animals a decade ago to over 18,000 animals in 2007.
Other areas of growth include the ARL’s programs designed specifically to address the reasons animals end up in shelters, including spay/neuter, behavior training, and humane education programs. For example, the ARL’s humane education program does more than offer classroom presentations and tours to community groups and schools. The ARL also has a theatrical presentation for assembly presentations to large groups of students including entire schools as well as a mobile puppet show. The ARL’s positive reinforcement training program has expanded to offer year-round classes, as well as free behavior advice for dogs, cats, rabbits and other pets. The behavior program has also started a collaboration with the state prison system, where inmates help teach basic manners to dogs and cats to increase the pets’ adoptability. The shelter continues to spay and neuter all dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and pigs that are adopted from our shelter — some 5,000 animals annually. Additionally, the ARL offers a Spay the Mother program, where free dog/cat spay certificates are provided to owners so they can spay their pets and prevent future unwanted litters.
Mission: To promote animal welfare, the human animal bond, and prevent the overpopulation of pets.

Animal Rescue League of Iowa Volunteer Information
There are few things as rewarding as helping a homeless animal find a loving new home. When you volunteer at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, you make a difference for homeless animals—whether you lift their spirits with a walk or sell tickets to the annual fundraising auction.
After your first visit to the ARL, you will find that volunteering for the animals is easy, fun and very rewarding. It’s a great way to impact the lives of thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and small animals. The most important skills you need to be a volunteer are love and respect for animals.
Becoming an ARL Volunteer
What: The first step to becoming an ARL Volunteer is to attend a volunteer orientation. No registration is needed. At orientation, you will learn more about the ARL, its programs, and what you can do to help. You’ll also receive an application and volunteer handbook.
When: Volunteer orientations are held the second Saturday of every month. Check out our Events Calendar for upcoming orientations.
Where: Orientations are held in the ARL Education and Training Center, located behind the main shelter, 5452 NE 22nd St., Des Moines, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
To work with animals, volunteers must be at least 12 years old. Volunteers younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult volunteer, at least 18 years of age, at all times. The adult volunteer also needs to have completed orientation and any subsequent training with their minor partner.
For volunteers 8-11 years of age, opportunities to volunteer include but are not limited to helping at special events or AniMeals packaging parties, projects at the shelter like unfolding newspapers or laundry assistance, as well as special projects that can be completed from home such as baking treats and bringing them to the adoptable animals, making Snuggles, or doing a collection drive.
