Angel Mounds State Historic Site Charity Profile

For over a thousand years, Southwestern Indiana was home to many Native Americans. Today, Angel Mounds State Historic Site is nationally recognized as one of the best preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the United States. From 1100 to 1450 A. D., a town on this site was home to people of the Middle Mississippian culture, who engaged in hunting and farming on the rich bottom lands of the Ohio River. Several thousand people lived in this town protected by a stockade made of wattle and daub. Because Angel Mounds was a chiefdom (the home of the chief) it was the regional center of a large community that grew outward from it for many miles.

This settlement was the largest known town of its time in Indiana, but the Mississippian people eventually deserted it. No one today knows why. Fortunately, preservation and archaeological efforts at Angel Mounds State Historic Site offer a glimpse into this highly developed culture of the distant past. For 60 years, this living museum has told the story of one pre-contact Native American culture on the Ohio River.
Characteristic of their culture, the Mississippian people at Angel built mounds in their town. In chiefdoms like Angel, the high-status families lived and were sometimes buried on top of some of the mounds. Priests and chiefs carried out ceremonies and rituals on the large temple mounds that dominated the town. Some of the mounds at Angel have been excavated by archaeologists, and they contain evidence of being many things: site of the chief's residence, religious and burial locations, garbage dumps, even natural elevations.

Angel Mounds State Historic Site Volunteer Information

Volunteer Opportunities
Because Angel Mounds State Historic Site is only manned by a limited number of staff members, volunteers are always needed for the various special events and programs that go on at the site.

Volunteer Program:
Consider volunteering at Angel Mounds State Historic Site!

Application, Interview, Selection & Placement:
Any person interested in becoming an Angel Mounds volunteer is required to complete an Emergency Contact Sheet and an Application & Interest Questionnaire (available from site Volunteer Coordinator), as well as a Limited Criminal Background Check (for the security of our visitors and other volunteers). These forms will help us to determine the most suitable volunteer position for each applicant. Interviews with the Volunteer Coordinator will be conducted for any long-term positions, but are not usually necessary for most short-term positions or special events. A potential volunteer has the right to accept or decline a position offered to them by the Volunteer Coordinator. Once placed in a position, it is expected that the volunteer meet the minimum hours requirement for Angel Mounds. All Special Events Volunteers are asked to volunteer for at least one event throughout the year. All other regularly scheduled volunteers are asked to give a minimum of four hours per month. All volunteer concerns, questions, comments and suggestions should be directed to the site Volunteer Coordinator. If a question cannot be answered, or an issue cannot be resolved at this level, it will then be directed to the Site Manager.

Attendance:
If a volunteer is scheduled to volunteer, but is unable to keep the commitment, it is essential to notify the Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible. Please remember that many of the activities at Angel Mounds depend on our volunteers. Volunteers are required to wear a volunteer badge whenever working at, or, on behalf of Angel Mounds State Historic Site. The badge identifies the volunteer and allows access to areas that are restricted to the public. The site Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for supplying the identification badges. As a representative of Angel Mounds State Historic Site, attire can be casual, but must be appropriate.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Angel Mounds offers many opportunities for volunteering, (both indoor and outdoor). We see some of our volunteers only for special events, while seeing others on a weekly basis. Presenting the Angel Mounds program to visiting children as an Education Volunteer, working as a Museum Docent, and being available as an outdoor Site Hike Guide are three of the areas where volunteers are currently needed most at Angel Mounds. For easy reference, the following is a brief listing of some of our available volunteer positions. Keep in mind that this not an all-inclusive listing. We encourage you to offer your suggestion should you identify a particular area where additional volunteer assistance would be beneficial but is not included on this list.
