Spectrum School Charity Profile
Spectrum School, formerly St. Francis Primary School, opened its doors in 1967 as one of the first Preschool/Kindergarten programs in Rockford. Initially based on the learning theories of John Dewey (Experience-Based Learning), Jean Piaget (Developmental Structures and Learning), and Maria Montessori.
The school moved to The Spectrum Center on Mulford and Guilford Roads in 1985. In 1988, Spectrum adopted Howard Gardner's "Theory of Multiple Intelligences" as a learning framework and delivery system which incorporated all learning techniques of Spectrum's Program.
In 1989, Spectrum became an Arts Integrated School. Expanded programming activities left the school in the midst of an exciting move to a newly remodeled, more versatile space at 2909 North Main Street. The new school was officially opened in 1995.
Rooted in the wisdom of its found ideals and nurtured by the dedication and inspiration of its faculty and parents, the curriculum and teaching methods of Spectrum School have developed and matured over the past 40 years. Leading psychologists and educational experts in the United States now consider Spectrum a model school in the forefront of educational change in our country.
