The Literacy Connection Charity Profile
The Literacy Connection, an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, is a non-profit, community-based 501(c)(3) organization helping individuals acquire fundamental literacy skills and/or learn to speak and write in English. Students are provided tutoring services free of charge in the sixteen communities we serve.
The Literacy Connection was organized in 1984. Since that time, hundreds of volunteers have provided thousands of students with tens of thousands of hours of tutoring. The agency has won numerous national honors.
The Literacy Connection Volunteer Information
The Literacy Connection needs volunteers to tutor adults in Basic Reading and English as a Second Language.
If you are at least 18 years old, can read, write and speak English, we invite you to become a volunteer tutor. No teaching experience or other special abilities are required and the time commitment is minimal.
Potential volunteers are asked to attend a one and a half hour orientation. After that, they may decide whether to attend 16 1/2 hours of workshop training to be a tutor. Training is offered at different times and locations to be as accessible as possible. A small fee is charged to cover materials. Administrative volunteers are also needed for mailings, graphic and web design, event planning, and other special projects.
