Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network IBMN Charity Profile
In 1987, The Nature Conservancy decided to explore the effects of management on animals by creating the Butterfly Monitoring Network (BMN). The network began monitoring at 7 sites in the Chicagoland area. Since then, people have been monitoring the health of butterfly populations throughout northeastern and central Illinois. These citizen scientist volunteers come from all walks of life to help in this ongoing program. A few people come to the program already knowing many butterflies, but most people begin knowing just a few common species. More than 100 sites are now being monitored every year, and the program is being expanded throughout Illinois.
