South Suburban Humane Society Charity Profile
The South Suburban Humane Society is a 501(c )(3) organization that was started in 1970, serving the animal welfare needs of the entire south suburbs of Chicago. In the beginning, we handled all rescues, adoptions and provided foster care out of private homes. Since November 1973, our organization has been operating a 10,000 square foot open-door animal shelter in Chicago Heights, Illinois.
For over thirty years, our organization has helped tens of thousands of animals. We have grown from a small group of volunteers to an organization made up of volunteers and paid employees that were responsible for almost 6,000 animals in 2006. We offer extensive outreach programs including humane education, abuse investigations, and community outreach events. We also operate two resale employments located in Steger, Illinois and Chicago Heights, Illinois that promote our organization, our animals and provide much needed income to support our humane work.

South Suburban Humane Society Volunteer Information
Volunteers are the heart of many organizations and ours is no exception. Without volunteers, we would not be able to offer the variety of services we currently do.
All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Younger volunteers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of their visit at the shelter or shelter function.
