FACT Charity Profile
The MISSION of Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) is to improve the welfare of farm animals; address public health problems such as the safety of meat, milk, and eggs; broaden opportunities for family farmers; and reduce environmental pollution.
Founded by Robert A. Brown in 1982, FACT is supported by contributions and primarily works in two areas: on-farm research and advocacy. FACT was the first U.S. organization devoted exclusively to farm animal problems. Our on-farm research
has given FACT extensive farming experience and firsthand knowledge. FACT then makes science-based recommendations to agricultural, public health, and environmental organizations and, especially, to federal regulatory agencies.
As a result of our effective and sustained advocacy efforts, FACT has a close working relationship with the Food and Drug Administration, the US Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and with international committees that set standards for drug use and humane care of farm animals. FACT is frequently called upon to testify by government bodies, and our staff has served as the consumer representative on FDA committees such as the Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee and on US Delegations to committees of Codex Alimentarious.
No other organization working to improve farm animal welfare has so many doors open to it. Opposition to change has often come from powerful forces within agribusiness and the animal drug industry. Early on progress was slow, but now FACT is making real progress in fulfilling its mission!
