Haitian Ministries Charity Profile
Mission Statement: "Helping Haitians help Haitians" We have a commitment to a permanent presence in Haiti to empower and support Haitians helping Haitians in their struggle for self-determination. Haitian Ministries for the Diocese of Norwich, a 501(c)(3) and an organization affiliated with the Catholic Church, does not discriminate in any way in its work in Haiti nor in its hiring practices. We seek to help those in most need, regardless of their faith or affiliations. Guided by the Haitian proverb 'Men anpil, chay pa lou' (Many hands lighten the load), we work hand-in-hand with Haitians in all that we do in their country. We hope to empower them and support their struggle to address the social and economic problems and injustices in their lives and communities. In keeping with our mission of 'Helping Haitians help Haitians,' we colloborate with Haitian individuals and organizations assisting those most in need. We financially support two orphanages, a meal program for children, a medical clinic, and medical missions. Also, we started and administer a scholarship program in which 140 children and young adults receive full tuitions to attend schools, some of them primary and secondary schools, others technical institutions and universities. We work with an agronomist who runs a small nature center, helps in reforestration programs throughout the country, and provides environmental education in schools. As part of our goal to build relationships between Haitian and American communities, we oversee a Twinning Program in which parishes and other groups in the United States formally create a relationship with parishes in the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. Today there are a dozen such convenants that involve 24 communities both in Haiti and the United States. We organize and host retreats for visitors at the Norwich Mission House in Port-au-Prince. Haitian Ministries has had a mission house in the capital since 1987. Through our non-profit shop, Haiti's Back Porch in Middletown, Conn., we support hundreds of artisans in Haiti. The shop sells a wide range of extraordinary art, crafts and other goods. Sales are made at the shop, at various craft events throughout the year, and through the Internet
