TALICA Charity Profile
TALICA is the Teaching and Learning Initiative for Central America.
TALICA’s mission is to conquer educational inequalities throughout Central America by establishing public school and community libraries that expand access to information and basic educational programs throughout the poorest and most isolated regions of Central America. These collections provide the necessary resources for public educators and local medical professionals to play a more active role in the lives of young people, and for parents to play a more active role in the lives of their children. As a result, the next generation of students will ultimately have greater access to education and subsequently to opportunities that will help them become upwardly mobile toward positive sustainable change.
Throughout TALICA’s brief history, it has provided over 4000 books including crucial textbooks, reference materials, literature, various non-fiction text, maps, globes and other learning materials. These materials are used daily in seven different public high schools, primary schools and two community libraries in the isolated villages of La Palma, Merida, Santa Cruz, Madronal, and Balgue on the island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua. TALICA’s programs reach hundreds and hundreds of children, parents, and teachers who live in severe to extreme poverty living on less than $1-3 per day. TALICA empowers public educators and school directors to provide higher quality of education due to having more resources.
