Florida Defenders Of The Environment Charity Profile

Florida Defenders of the Environment has been protecting freshwater resources, promoting conservation of public lands and providing quality environmental education since 1969.

FDE was founded in 1969 to stop the Cross Florida Barge Canal. It might have seemed far-fetched that a relatively small group of concerned citizens could stop a massive federal project already in progress to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico but, in 1971, the work was halted. In their pioneering effort to stop the canal, FDE members completed one of the nation's first environmental impact statements.

FDE welcomes volunteers to help support our work to protect Florida's freshwater resources, conserving public lands and furthering environmental education in Floirda. Volunteer opportunities include work days on conservation land, assistance with special events, and help with office and administrative work
