The Finnish HIV Foundation / AIDS Council launches a new HIV prevention programme targeting travelers
According to the National Public Health Institute, there has been an increase of HIV infections in Finland, and the proportion of Finns who have acquired an HIV infection or other sexually transmitted infections (STI) abroad has grown. Nearly 60 % of the HIV infections transmitted through heterosexual contacts have been acquired abroad. The most infections were from sexual encounters from South-East Asia (25 %), mainly Thailand; Western Europe (27%) and Africa (19%). More and more HIV transmissions have been acquired in Russia and the Baltic States, and it is expected that most HIV infections in the coming years will be acquired also in these countries along with South-East Asia. Concerning the other STIs, nearly 40 and 20 per cent of the gonorrhea infection cases among men and women respectively have been acquired abroad. While the syphilis became meanwhile extremely rare in Finland, recently many cases have again been reported. Out of these cases (among men and women), one third of have been acquired while travelling abroad, often in Russia.
