Shelter for the Homeless Charity Profile
The mission of Shelter for the Homeless is to serve homeless adults in the greater Stamford, Connecticut area, including Greenwich, Darien, and New Canaan. The Shelter has three main areas of operation, emergency overnight shelter and meals for homeless men 18 years of age and older; support services for both men and women who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, and a transitional housing facility (Berkeley House) for those ready to take the next step to longer-term, affordable housing.
Our goal is to help clients to become self-sufficient and to find appropriate, longer-term housing. We offer a point of re-entry into the community for individuals who might otherwise remain homeless or displaced. The Shelter is an advocate for housing for the homeless and for the eventual elimination of homelessness.
Shelter for the Homeless Volunteer Information
Volunteers are a vital part of our Shelter for the Homeless family, and help make our facilities welcoming and our operations effective and efficient. Volunteers support our professional staff, and continually inspire us and our clients with their dedication and spirit. Volunteers also serve as ambassadors for the Shelter within our community by educating the public about our organization and programs. Shelter for the Homeless aspires to appropriately match the needs of our organization with the interests, talents, and skills of our volunteers. The following are just some of the current responsibilities assumed by our volunteers:
Meal Preparation and Service
Nutritious dinners at Shelter for the Homeless are prepared or purchased by groups and families offsite, and brought into our warming kitchen at our Pacific House emergency shelter. Groups of no fewer than four individuals are needed to prepare and serve meals on a nightly basis, and so this opportunity is a great introduction to volunteer service at the Shelter.
Evening Hosts
Evening Hosts assist the residential staff with the meal sign-in and bed assignments processes, with the distribution of linens and toiletries, and with answering the phones. The standard shift begins at 5:30 PM and ends at 8:00 PM, and is supervised by the on-duty Residential Manager.
Tutoring
Tutors work with clients to improve skills in a wide variety of areas, including reading and literacy, English as a Second Language, basic education, computer skills, and vocational skills. Tutors also support clients who seek to earn their General Education Diploma (G.E.D.). Volunteers interested in becoming tutors must complete an application and orientation process before they can work with clients.
Administration
Some volunteers provide administrative or specialized assistance for professional staff in the various departments at Shelter for the Homeless. The Development office also needs extra help periodically with fundraising activities (mailings, phone calls, and events).
Transportation
Volunteers are sometimes needed to help meet the transportation needs of clients, and to help pick-up and deliver supplies and in-kind donations to the Shelter.
Construction and Facilities Maintenance
Volunteers often help paint, fix and maintain our facilities – activities that may draw upon a wide range of skills and experiences!
