Pueblo Zoological Society Charity Profile

Located in Pueblo, Colorado, the Pueblo Zoo covers 25 acres, in Pueblo City Park. The Zoo is open all year long and is easily accessible for all visitors including those using strollers or wheelchairs.

The Pueblo Zoo is managed by the Pueblo Zoological Society and is accredited through the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA). The Zoo is home to over 400 animals of 130 species. You will enjoy strolling through beautifully landscaped grounds that lead you to Serengeti Safari, North American Grasslands, the Australian Outback, and on an Asian Adventure. Visit the tropical rain forest and the only underwater viewing of penguins in Colorado at the Ecocenter. Visiting the Islands of Life building will take you on a shipwreck journey around the world. Children meet friendly farm animals in the Pioneer Ranch and if you visit the northern river otter exhibit, you will be treated to the rare opportunity of observing the otters as they swim and frolic underwater.

Pueblo Zoological Society Volunteer Information

Your volunteer time can make a difference at the Pueblo Zoo.

Pueblo Zoo’s Volunteer Program can be an exciting experience! Volunteers play important roles in education, gardening, special events, the gift shop, and many other exciting areas of the Zoo!

What Do Volunteers Do?

There are many volunteer opportunities at Pueblo Zoo.

Docent (Education) Program:
Docents present classes and programs both on and off Zoo grounds. Enrich learning experiences for our Zoo guests or take the Zoo to schools, nursing homes, and other groups. Education volunteers are called Docents.

ZooCrew:
ZooCrew is a summer program for teens 14 through 17 years of age - must have completed 8th grade. Teens work with a zookeeper—taking care of the domestic animals in the Pioneer Ranch, learning to handle farm animals, and interacting with visitors.

Contact Area:
At regularly scheduled hours the public is allowed to feed and/or touch the goats, sheep, miniature horses, llamas, and donkeys. Volunteer as an attendant in the contact area.

Ranch Hand:
Assist keepers in cleaning, feeding, and caring for ranch animals. Learn to halter and walk llamas and miniature horses.

Special Events:
Help staff with an array of educational and fundraising events throughout the year, such as Senior Safari, Family Day, and ElectriCritters.

Gift Shop:
Staff the gift shop for a 4-5 hour shift. Operate a cash register. The gift shop is managed and operated by volunteers. Profits help fund operation of the Zoo.

Gardening:
There are extensive gardens of many kinds at the Zoo. Help plant, weed, and mulch.

Much, Much More!
If you have special skills or talents, let us know…there are many and varied areas of the Zoo that need YOUR help!
