Mi Casa Resource Center For Women, Inc. Charity Profile
Our mission is to advance self-sufficiency for primarily low-income Latinas and youth. In 1976, eight Head Start mothers living in Denver's Westside community founded what would become Mi Casa. They did not have a name for it just then, but they had a clear vision of its purpose as a place for women who wanted more for themselves and their families. They sought a safe and supportive place where women could complete their education, acquire employment skills and where their children could get help and encouragement in school. By 1978, there was a name for this vision - Mi Casa Resource Center for Women.
Since its founding in 1976, thousands of low-income, primarily Latinas and youth have come to Mi Casa with little more than hope and dreams: hope for a brighter tomorrow, dreams of a good job, a home of one's own and a child's future. For many of these women, their first step through Mi Casa's front door is the beginning of a journey to self-sufficiency and opportunity.
What transforms dreams into self-sufficiency? A combination of factors: hard work, individual effort, and the availability of comprehensive educational and employment programs through Mi Casa. Today, Mi Casa is considered a national model for welfare reform and has been recognized and endorsed by then First Lady and now Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Mi Casa continues to expand its services and outreach to better meet clients' needs. To accomplish this, Mi Casa has four locations in Denver and locations in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, focused primarily on providing programs for adult women. But one thing has not changed for the women who come to Mi Casa: like all the women who have come before them, they know that it is truly their house - a place where they can turn dreams into reality by acquiring skills for self-sufficiency.
Mi Casa is an IRS 501(c)3, Colorado nonprofit corporation offering a variety of services through its three programs: Business Centers, Career Services and Youth Development.
